RCS chats on LineageOS
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Ever since I switched, I see "Connected" in the RCS status but I don't actually have RCS chats.

Apparently this is because Google is silently blocking RCS on phones running custom ROMs. Yet another example of adding insult to the injury of refusing to release updates for my phone model from them!

I could root my phone to fix this, an annoying process I didn't really want to do, and it would ironically make it a bit less secure though then be able to fool Google into actually treating it as secure. Or, I could find some other messaging app for this, though I'd ideally want one that was self-hostable for a sync to a desktop client somehow. I'd lazily been just using Google Messages for that, but Google is doing their best to dissuade me from using their products . . .

Judging by https://forum.f-droid.org/t/rcs-supported-message-sms-mms-app/13423 and otherwise ironically Googlin' around it really doesn't seem like there's any options for RCS chats that aren't in fact less trustworthy than Google. So the choices are actually either to fool Google or to give up on RCS I guess?

Hope for alternate sync to Nextcloud somewhat dashed by https://github.com/nextcloud/ocsms/issues/356 and the like. https://github.com/eblah/nextcloud-messagevault appears to limp along but is basically read-only, and seems to rely on also using a proprietary app that isn't available in F-Droid, at least if I'm understanding correctly and https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.github.tmo1.sms_ie/ isn't actually compatible with it (though issues like https://github.com/eblah/nextcloud-messagevault/issues/8 indicate an eagerness, if admittedly not the personal bandwidth, for more support).

https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.github.axet.smsgate/ claims to just outright use IMAP and allow replies? Okay that's interesting...
